Database Administration
Introduction
Data is one of the most valuable assets of an organization. No organization can survive without its data. Therefore, it is very important for anybody to take utmost care of their data. The database system provides the organization with centralized control of its data. The overall purpose of database system is to maintain information and make the information available on demand. There is a need for an expert who understands the technical needs of maintaining data in an optimize way and have enough technical knowledge to perform the needed operations to maintain the data. The expert who is responsible for implementing the management level decisions in the database is the Database Administrator or in short the DBA. The DBA is an IT professional who provides the necessary technical support for implementing the strategic and policy decisions regarding the data of the organization. The DBA has the overall control of the database system at a technical level.

Some of the functions that a DBA has to perform are as follows:

Create / Design the Conceptual Schema of the database.
The DBA must also decide how the data is to be represented in the stored database and this process is called as physical database design. The next job is to create the corresponding storage structure definition (i.e. the internal schema). The DBA has to define the associated mapping between the internal and conceptual schemas.
The DBA has to act as an intermediary between user and database and ensures that the data required by the users is available.
DBA defines the security and integrity rules. DBA defines which user has access to which data.
Defining backup and recovery procedures and performing backup and recovery so that data is safe in case of some failure.
Monitoring performance and to ensure that the Database System operates in an optimized way.
Performs the changes responding to changing requirements.
